This is the "after" pic...right?
Where have we come as a society when an obviously fake plastic surgery look is considered beautiful? Sure, the people on Extreme Makeover aren’t going to win any beauty pageants, but it’s their horrific self image that is the terrible thing here.

The show follows two heinous individuals as they attempt to transform themselves into a socially acceptable, barely functioning, inhuman monsters. The production team sweeps up the backwards hicks and sends them to Los Angeles, the land of Jon Voight’s too-tight eye job and Meg Ryan’s over-collagened lips. There, they’re treated to optional surgery, and fawned over by a team of cosmetic dentists and fashion consultants. Finally, there’s the big reveal, when the paticipants are unveiled like silicon statues in front of amazed and repulsed family and friends.

Taken on the basis of it’s production (which, I’m obviously not doing – I hate the whole idea of this show), Extreme Makeover isn’t as good as some of the shows on Discovery and TLC. Not only do they completely glance over the surgical operations, there’s no demonstration of the work that goes into deciding what needs to be done with the person’s face. Although, come to think about it, the results for some of these people are so bad, maybe it’s better that they don’t focus too much on it. We also don’t get to learn much about the people themselves, and what forces them to decide on such a drastic change in their lives.

The good doctor

Of course, there’s a lot to enjoy. My favorite was an appearance by a creepy doctor who himself has had far too much plastic surgery. Wrinkled skin pulled tight across sinew, he appeared to be a living incarnation of a movie monster – someone whose face looks nothing like he once did. There’s also a perverse fascination to be had with results of the surgery. You just can’t wait to see how bad it’s going to turn out. They go too far. They go too damn far. Sure the lady has a big nose. Fine, get your surgery and put an end to it. But is it really necessary to get breast implants and a giant, fake looking chin as well? That’s some crazy bullshit.

Hey, it was only one episode but Extreme Makeover managed to undercut my belief in the American people. Of course, it didn’t do it any more harm than From Justin to Kelly.
